The 2019 law student writing competition in cultural heritage law
The Lawyers' Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation is pleased to announce its 2019 Law StudentWriting Competition. Through this competition we endeavor to encourage and recognize scholarship in cultural heritage law by recognizing law students for superior papers in the field. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, June 30, 2019.
Who is Eligible to Submit a Paper?
The competition is open to U.S. law students at law schools approved by the American Bar Association and recent law graduates who were students at the time they wrote their papers.Students enrolled in aJD,LLB, or other first degree program in law at an accredited faculty outside the United States may also participate. Students must be in good standing at their institutions. They are encouraged, but not required, to be a member of the Lawyers' Committee for Cultural Heritage Preservation.
Papers must be the work of one student author alone (joint submissions will not be considered). Each author may submit only one paper to this year’s competition.
What Papers are Eligible for Consideration?
To be eligible for consideration, the paper must have been written between January 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019. Papers that have been published or accepted for publication are eligible for consideration as long as the other eligibility and formatting requirements are satisfied. A paper may only be submitted once to LCCHP (i.e., not in two consecutive competitions).
Papers may address any aspect of cultural heritage law relating to art, terrestrial and submerged cultural property, historic preservation, indigenous peoples, and intangible cultural heritage, but not intellectual property or family law issues, except as they relate to material cultural heritage.

THE 2018 PHIL COWAN MEMORIAL/BMI SCHOLARSHIP WRITING COMPETITION
The Entertainment, Arts & Sports law Section of the New York State Bar Association (EASL), in partnership with Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI), has established the Phil Cowan Memorial/BMI Scholarship. The Phil Cowan Memorial/BMI Scholarship has been in effect since 2005. It is awarded each year at EASL’s Annual Meeting in January in New York City.
Each Scholarship Candidate must write an original paper on any legal issue of current interest in the area of entertainment, art or sports law. The Scholarship Committee will read the papers submitted and will select the Scholarship recipient(s).
The Phil Cowan Memorial/BMI Scholarship funds offers up to two awards of $2,500 each on an annual basis in Phil Cowan’s memory to a law student who is committed to a practice concentrating in one or more areas of entertainment, art or sports law. The paper should be twelve (12) to fifteen (15) pages in length.

THE WILLIAM C. CONNER INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW WRITING COMPETITION
The William C. Conner Intellectual Property Law Writing Competition is a writing competition for law students and is sponsored by The New York Intellectual Property Law Association (NYILPA). The NYILPA established the competition in honor of William C. Conner, a former president of NYILPA, in 1992.
Entries may be directed to any of the following subject areas of intellectual property, i.e., patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, unfair trade practices, antitrust, and data security/privacy issues. The entries will be judged on interest and suitability of topic, organization, legal analysis, writing, and professionalism of the work product.
The winner will receive a cash award of $1,500.00 and a plaque at the NYILPA Annual Meeting and Dinner to be held in New York City on May 14, 2019 at the Princeton Club. The runner-up will receive a cash award of $1,000.00 and a plaque at the Annual Meeting and Dinner. The winning paper will be considered for publication by the NYILPA. There is a twenty (20) page maximum limit for all entries.

The 17th Annual Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition
The Entertainment Law Initiative (ELI) Writing Competition is a co-sponsored competition with the American Bar Association (ABA). It is offered as an opportunity for students to challenge themselves by identifying, researching, and writing an essay with a proposed solution on a compelling legal issue in the music industry. The competition is judged by a national panel of music law experts.
The judges will select five finalists. The winner is awarded a $5,000 scholarship with airfare, hotel accommodations, and a ticket to the GRAMMY Awards. The four runner-ups will receive a scholarship of $1,500. The essay cannot exceed a maximum of 3,000 words.
